Tree pruning misconceptions

Trees Should Be Pruned During Winter Months – One common misconception is that trees should only be pruned during winter months when they are dormant. While it is true that winter can be a better time to perform certain types of maintenance such as removing broken or diseased limbs without stressing the tree too much, there are other times throughout the year where pruning may actually benefit a tree’s health if done correctly.

You Should Cut All Branches That Cross Over One Another – Another common misconception surrounding tree pruning is that all branches which cross over each other should be cut away from one another regardless of their size or position within the canopy structure as this will help prevent further intertwining from happening later down the line after future growth has occurred – however, this couldn’t be further from the truth!

Topping Trees Will Increase Their Health – Topping refers to cutting off large portions of the top canopy exposing the trunk section underneath so often practiced amongst arborists as means of reducing height while still maintaining a certain shape desired aesthetically speaking but unfortunately, the myth exists stating topping improves overall health status associated with a particular specimen

Our full tree pruning process

Cutting hedge can be a challenging task, but with the right tools and techniques, it can be done effectively. Here are the steps our tree surgeons will follow.

Our process always starts with a telephone consultation with our customer and / or email discussion. At this stage of the process our expert tree surgeon or our secretary Michelle (who is also trained in tree surgery) will ask for images of the hedge to be worked on.

Our tree surgeon teams will look at the photograph and start outlining a plan of action, together with a free quotation.

Before starting the removal process, your tree surgeon will assess the size of the garden and location.

If the hedge is located near buildings, power lines, or other structures, we may need more than one tree surgeon.

Begin at one end of the hedge and work your way to the other end. Hold the trimmer with both hands and make sure the blades are parallel to the ground. This will help you make a straight cut.

Use a sweeping motion to cut. Move the trimmer back and forth in a sweeping motion, making sure to cut only a small amount of foliage at a time. This will help you avoid cutting too much and damaging the hedge.

  1. Cut from the bottom up. Start trimming at the bottom of the hedge and work your way up. This will help you see where you have already cut and ensure that the hedge is even.

  2. Cut the top last. After you have trimmed the sides, it’s time to trim the top. Use a ladder if necessary to reach the top of the hedge. Cut the top in the same sweeping motion as the sides, making sure to keep the blades parallel to the ground.

Take a few steps back and look at the hedge from a distance. Make any necessary adjustments to the shape or height.

Once you have finished trimming, remove any clippings from the tarp or sheet and dispose of them properly.

Regular pruning will help keep the hedge looking its best. Make sure to reduce the hedge at least once a year, or more often if necessary.
